An Ode to You

(my Inner Child)

November 2020

An Ode to You is a three-part series about the metamorphosis of allowing the hidden feelings of my inner child to be revealed and set free. Using the techniques of Haitian Carnival Mask making, the masks conjure my true hidden feelings of anger, confusion, sadness and fluidity up to the surface.

Each piece showcases a defining life stage of transformation. The works reflect my transition to finally being able to see myself. To heal and forgive my inner child for hiding who I was, and to allow these expressions and emotions to rise up to the surface.

The butterfly is the final part of the series but the beginning of growth. It evokes freeing my inner child, healing from trauma and moving away from comfort.

The works incorporate dried plants, flowers and natural textiles—Silk, Cotton and a Silk & Wool Blend dyed with Indigo, Kamala and Logwood—collaged with photographs from my family album.
